German at the University of Ulster
 | Why study German? German is the first language of more than 100 million people in Europe. It has been the language of some of the greatest figures in science and the arts, from Albert Einstein to Thomas Mann, from Beethoven to Günter Grass. It is the language of some of the most tragic events in European history but also of some of Europe's richest art, literature and music. Germany is also the economic and financial centre of Europe, with the European Central Bank located at Frankfurt/Main. Studying German, including the history, society, politics and culture of the country, will give you a thorough understanding of one of the most important societies in Europe. This will give you a real competitive edge in the job market, as well as exposing you to experiences which will enrich your life, through extended contact (some of it in Germany, Austria or Switzerland) with a language and culture that are at the heart of Europe. |
| | | Our degrees The key feature of our degrees is flexibility and variety. No matter which course or combination of subjects you take, in German you will develop excellent practical language skills, taking core language modules which emphasise accuracy and vocabulary acquisition as well as the ability to communicate orally and in writing. All our staff are either native German speakers or English speakers who have lived and worked for long periods in Germany. |
|
Within our optional modules, you can choose to follow courses in history, literature and film. Or you can simply concentrate on the language and contemporary society. Within the modules of study you will receive training in oral presentation and communication skills, as well as in the techniques of writing, translating and interpreting, all skills that are valued by employers. | Year Abroad As part of your degree studies, you will spend either a semester or a full year abroad in a German-speaking country. We have SOCRATES exchange links with the Universities of Berlin (Free University), Bielefeld, Bremen, Chemnitz, Erlangen, Freiburg, Paderborn and Siegen. Many students also go to Germany or Austria as assistant teachers, paid by the host country. We also approve work placements in some courses. |
