The University has selected a range of short courses designed to allow you to explore new interests and to enhance aspects of your current interests. The short course format leads to a learning environment that is relaxed and enjoyable with the level of challenge primarily determined by the participant. Most of the courses are associated with the Certificate in Open Learning, however the stand-alone modules are associated to other award-bearing courses and opportunities for credit transfer exist.

Ever wondered what your relatives did in the First World War and how you might go about tracing their records? This short course, run in collaboration with the Somme Heritage Centre in Newtownards, will introduce you to some of the key aspects of the involvement of Ulster and Irish regiments in the Great War, especially the 36th (Ulster) Division, which recruited mostly in East Ulster, and the 16th (Irish) Division, which recruited in West Ulster and beyond. Moving on from there it will show you how to use different records, some of them online, to trace your own relatives who were involved. The course will run for 9 weeks, including seven lectures and two field trips to the Somme Centre in Newtownards, and is for anyone with an interest in World War I or in tracing ancestors who fought in it.

Thursday nights, 6.15-8.15pm, University of Ulster, Magee Campus, Derry/Londonderry, beginning 22 October
