To mark her final seminar as Director of the Centre for Media Research, and also the launch of her new book Children, media and culture (Open University Press/McGraw Hill), Professor Máire Messenger Davies will review the research and some of the academic and public controversies on which the book draws. She will also look back over some of the projects on children, media and culture conducted by the CMR with local children - including the international study on what makes children laugh, 'Is that funny anywhere else?' (2005) and 'What do children want from the BBC?' (2008-9). There will be refreshments, courtesy of the publishers, and also some copies of the book available.

the visualisation of television audiences.

Play and the Virtual Environment - Read More...
Alan Hook, School of Media Film and Journalism University of Ulster, will consider the use of play in virtual spaces as a continuing thread through his practice based research. These investigations into participatory ludic encounters have seen his work exhibited both in virtual galleries in places such as Second Life but also as part of the permanent collection in The Tech Museum in San Jose (CA). Alan will present a number of projects which will look at play, games and virtual environments which investigates the thin and blurry line between Videogames and Metaverses.
