Studying English, you will look at practical elements of literary criticism and interpretation, the ways in which gender, nationality and cultural/historical context affect form and meaning. You will study a range of major literary texts from the main periods of English literary history from Shakespeare to the 20th c., as well as a range of other texts from various periods and genres, which you will be able to choose in addition to this literary-historical survey. Emerging from their studies with a widely-recognised and respected degree, English graduates a well-placed to embark on a range of possible careers.

This joint programme allows you to develop crucial academic skills and knowledge as well as the opportunity to develop your own creative practice. It will equip you for a range of career destinations in the creative industries and beyond, since you develop crucial transferable skills in areas such as group work, project management, critical analysis, problem-solving, communication and the use of technology. So, you may go on to work in the theatre, or train as a secondary teacher of Drama and/or English, or become a marketing executive. The programme progresses from a foundation in approaches to study in each discipline in the first year, through to a final year in which the content and range of modules is selected by each student, allowing you to tailor the programme to your interests and aspirations. While modules in English focus largely on Victorian and modern literature, with optional modules in American Literature, Drama modules focus on contemporary practices. Students also negotiate their own independent work in final year.

On Belfast campus you can choose between a series of short courses of two-week duration and/or 2 year part-time taught programme. If you enjoy modern novels, poetry and drama and would like the opportunity to study these at university level then Belfast is for you. The course is for anyone with a preference for part-time study, and is especially suitable for those whose current circumstances make a full-time degree course impractical.
